Malcom X Memorial Foundation Receives $20 Million from State Grant

Rowena Moore founded the Malcom X Memorial Foundation in Omaha, Neb., in 1971 to honor her late brother, Malcom X, who died in a plane crash at age 21.

Now, more than 40 years later, the foundation is getting $20 million from the state of Nebraska to expand the 17-acre site into a cultural museum, education center, and outdoor amphitheater, the Omaha World-Herald reports.

"Essentially this area has never had this much funding poured into it in such a way that the entire community will benefit from," says executive director JoAnna LeFlore-Ejike.

"Once you know these kids see that we got something for them, I am thinking it's going to benefit them and you know we probably be able to get the kids out the building because it's going to feel too much like a good home," volunteer Y'Shell Davis tells KETV.

Davis, who was raised in North Omaha, says she's been inspired by Malcom X's autobiography, My Name Is Malcom X, which he read to her when she was a teen.

"A light came on," she says, "it gave me clarity and vision and it gave me hope.
