If you're an artist trying to break into the music business, there's a good chance you've never heard of entertainment law.

But if you're a law student at Mercer University in Georgia, you may have just heard of it.

The school's School of Law, School of Music, and Capricorn Music at Capricorn recently teamed up to offer a one-day seminar on "intellectual property, contracts, and labor" for aspiring industry professionals, the Macon Telegraph reports.

The April 13 event featured a panel of experts who covered such topics as intellectual property copyright, elements of a songwriter's/artist contract for recording, elements of an entertainment contract for performance, trademark law, and negotiation for an artist recording contract.

"Anyone who has had success in the music business will quickly tell you that talent will only get you so far, and then you better know the business, have a great entrepreneurial work ethic, and surround yourself with a great team of professionals," self-proclaimed Capricorn Sound Studios volunteer Bear Ivey, who helped organize the event, said in a press release.

Ivey, who graduated from Mercer's School of Music in 1984, is a musician, producer, writer, speaker, and author who has had success in the music business for four decades Read the Entire Article
