When Iowa resident Opal Heckroth died in 2014, she left behind a fortune estimated to be in the ballpark of $15 million, the Quad-City Times reports.

So when the Dysart Community Foundation was born in 2024, the first thing the board did was contact Heckroth's widow, Jan Heckroth, to see if there were any organizations in the town she loved that could use the money.

"She said, 'No, no, no, no,'" Jan Heckroth tells the Times.

"And we said, 'You know, we could do a lot of things.'" Among the organizations the foundation reached out to: the Dysart Public Library, the Dysart Fine Arts Women's Club, the Wolf Creek Players, the Dysart Historical Society, the Union Middle School, and the Dysart Lions Club.

According to a press release, the foundation's goal is "to make a lasting impact on the future quality of life for citizens of all ages in our local community."

Since its founding in 1997, the foundation has given out $104,976 to groups in the town of 2,800, the Quad-City Times reports. Read the Entire Article
