Japanese artist Shigeru Mizuki is best known for creating the "GeGeGe Kit noaro" horror manga series, but a new exhibit at the Sogo Museum of Art in Yokohama is paying special attention to his work of yokai, or folktale illustrations, reports the Japan Times.
Mizuki, who died in 2015, was inspired by artists Toriyama Sekien and Kunio Yanagita, who were well-known in their day for creating ukiyo-e paintings, or folktale illustrations.
Mizuki would often visit used bookstore districts to pick up publications of Sekien and Yanagita, and would draw his inspiration from those works.
The exhibit, which runs through March 10, features 112 of his yokai illustrations, as well as reference materials that he used for his comic books, and his work tools and yokai statues are on display. Read the Entire Article
