When two sisters in their 20s died in a freak accident on their family farm in Mercer County, Ill., they left behind a legacy of giving.

The Dorothy-Dorothy-lake Foundation, set up in their names, has awarded more than $1 million in grants since its founding in 2013, including $30,000 to Keithsburg, Ill., to build a performance stage, the Quad-City Times reports.

"By making the grant effort, we're excited to learn with other organizations and even some of our projects together," says the executive director of the foundation, which was started by sisters Dorothy and Roberta Thompson.

"The result is art initiatives that will benefit communities across Mercer County."

Among the projects funded by the foundation: a new light installation in a park in Keithsburg, as well as music and other projects in the community.

"We did update light in the park to create some buzz for the gala," says the city's city representative.

"The grant allowed us to bring this event to the community, and we have amazing vision that's already thinking about how to build," adds the executive director of Mercer County Art Collective, which received a $30,000 grant to build a performance stage.
