Social goals now top revitalization plans for south downtown neighborhood

Instead of using superficial changes to rebrand a low-income area, local government in downtown Lincoln, Nebraska plan to provide social assistance to these residents. The focus on programs comes after public outcry to rename the impoverished area "So Do" and build newer, more expensive housing that could have driven out the residents, many of whom live below poverty lines and are unemployed.

Meetings between public officials and the locals guarantee that there will be more revitalization than gentrification. Potential ideas include high-speed Internet accessibility to attract companies and a library for the area where residents struggle with poor living conditions. Consultants will continue to work with residents needs when they return in the spring to hammer out the details of the 25-year proposed plan. Read the Entire Article
