Major Report Shows Economic Conditions for Artists at Odds with the Value We Place on the Arts

"It is now harder than ever for artists to make a living," the Sydney Morning Herald quotes Creative Australia CEO Adrian Collette as saying after the release of a new report on the working lives of Australian artists.

The report, Artists as Workers: An Economic Study of Professional Artists in Australia by David Throsby and Katya Petetskaya, was commissioned by Creative Australia and is the fourth in a series carried out over four decades by Throsby and colleagues at Macquarie University.

According to the report, the average income of Australian artists is $54,500, which is about 26% less than the average income of the rest of the workforce.

That's despite the fact that artists are "highly educated, highly skilled," and "that Australians deeply value their contribution," Collette says.

The report found that women now outnumber men in almost all artistic occupations, that the number of artists with disability has doubled since 2016, and that women artists earn 19% less than their male counterparts.

However, Throsby says he hopes the report "will serve as a clarion call for informed discussion to promote measures that support the sustainability of artists' careers into the future."

Other findings in the report include: Only 9% of artists work full-time solely on their creative practice, down from 23% in Read the Entire Article
