Baritone Brian James Myer is known for his portrayal of Figaro in the New York City Opera's production of Il barbiere di Siviglia last year, and now he's making headlines for a different reason: He's the first openly gay man to play the title role in an opera, reports the New York Times.
Myer made his debut in the role in 2012, and since then he's performed with the New York City Opera, Opera Delaware, Opera San Jose, Opera Las Vegas, Palm Beach Opera, USC Thornton Opera, and the Los Angeles Opera, among others.
He made his US house debut in 2014 with the Palm Beach Opera as diction coach for their production of Les Contes d'Hoffmann and has since been on the music staff of Charlottesville Opera, Opera Memphis, OperaRoanoke, Palm Beach Opera, Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, USC Thornton Opera, UCLA Alpert School of Music, Pacific Opera Project, and the Los Angeles Opera Education Department.
Now he's set to play the title role in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro in Baltimore on Dec.
10, 2023, as part of Opera Baltimore's "Salon Series," reports the Baltimore Sun.
