A bibliophile and author of children's books is donating $500,000 to the University of Denver to create an early literacy program for at-risk children and their families, the Denver Post reports.

"I believe that books are for everyone," says Taylor Kirkpatrick, a 2004 DU graduate and president and CEO of Babson Farms.

" access to books and early literacy programs can contribute to childrensand their familiesoverall well-being."

Kirkpatrick's gift will create "WeRead," an interactive space on campus where families can connect with faculty from the Graduate School of Social Work and the Graduate School of Professional Psychology.

It will also fund early childhood psychoeducation, evidence-based caregiver education, and extensive community outreach.

"I can think of no finer example of leadership than Taylors," says dean of University Libraries Michael Levine-Clark.

"His investment in expanding the reach of DU's academic expertise is unparalleled."

Kirkpatrick's gift will also fund the Early Childhood Readers Collection, the first endowed gift at DU in support of early learning and literacy through University Libraries.
