If you're a medical student in China, there's a good chance you've heard of the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program for College Students (I&E Program), which aims to promote innovation and entrepreneurship education in higher education, fostering students' practical skills and innovative spirit.

The study, published in the journal BMC Medical in May, was based on a survey of nearly 50 medical students at Central South University in Hunan province who'd participated in the I&E Program, which started in 2010 at the request of the country's Ministry of Education, per a press release.

The I&E Program "significantly enhances research abilities and fosters confidence in their study," the study states, and many students who'd participated in the program had "received competition awards and improved their academic experience, article writing, and application patents."

The I&E Program also "encourages student collaboration and networking, fostering student collaboration and networking, fostering students' practical skills and innovative spirit," and "supports intellectual property protection," per the press release.

The program has since expanded to 1,731 programs at 1,731 universities, with 16,300 projects submitted by students in 2011, the study notes.
