A 16-year-old from Rhode Island is headed to Washington, DC, in April to compete in the Poetry Out Loud national finals.
Jennifer Shon, a junior at Portsmouth Abbey School, won the state competition in March with her recitation of "Say Grace," reports the Providence Journal.
She'll be competing against students from across the country in regional semifinals, then the national finals on April 30 and May 2.
The Poetry Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Mid Atlantic Arts started the competition in 1965 as a way for students to study poetry.
Since its inception, some 3.6 million students have taken part.
