When Matthew Zuehlke started teaching band in the Dublin City School District in Ohio 25 years ago, he didn't think he'd last that long.
But the director of bands at Karrer Middle School in Dublin has three children in his bands, and the "highlight of my career was having my three children all in my bands at some point," he tells the Columbus Dispatch.
Zuehlke, who graduated from Ohio's Miami University with a bachelor's in music education in 1999, says his studio professor was a "special teacher" who drove up to work with tubas and euphoniums every week.
"He really was a special teacher," Zuehlke says.
"It really is crazy now getting together at Miami Football games to watch our children march together."
Zuehlke's youngest daughter is a history major at Miami and plays in the Marching Band, while his oldest daughter plays in the Marching Band and the oboe.
"We made music, played hockey, and broom-ball together and went to class," Zuehlke tells the Dispatch.
"My professors were all amazing as well.
Jack Liles, Dave Shaffer, Gary Speck, Sam Reynolds, and many others helped shape me into the teacher and person I am today
