A Detroit woman is being honored with a social service award in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., the Detroit Free Press reports.
Maha Freij, president and CEO of the Arab American Community Services of Michigan, will receive the "Let Freedom Ring" award on Jan.
15 inDEARBORN.
The award is given to people whose work and actions "embodies Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy of social justice and humanity," according to a press release.
Freij has been a leader in the Arab American community for 33 years.
Under her leadership, ACCESS has raised tens of millions of dollars for endowment building and vital projects, including the Arab American National Museum, the Center for Arab American Philanthropy, the National Network for Arab American Communities, and the Center for Arab Narratives.
A trailblazer in philanthropy and social impact, Freij serves on numerous boards, including the Michigan State Board of Ethics, the Council of Michigan Foundations, the Growing Michigan Together Council, an advisory body within the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Board of Trustees, and the DTE Community Advisory Council.
