The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design has deemed Kansas City University's new Center for Medical Education Innovation a winner of its 2023 American Architecture Award.
The 34,000-square-foot building, designed by CO Architects and Helix Architecture + Design, "recontextualizes existing buildings into a dynamic student-oriented outdoor amenity, while programmatically focusing on simulation to support a wide spectrum of competency and skills-based training for students and regional health care professionals," the firm says in a press release.
The center, which opened in September, is designed to be a physical manifestation of the university's commitment to clinical education, per the Chicago Tribune.
It includes a three-story glass pavilion along a quad that "recontextualizes existing buildings into a dynamic student-oriented outdoor amenity," as the press release puts it, and a cantilevered roof that "enables simulation to expand into the outdoor space and enabling ambulances, fire trucks, and mobile imaging vehicles to be integrated into simulated training scenarios."
Inside, there's a raked two-story lobby, a multi-level stepped forum facing west, a simulation deck with a sunken garden level visible only from the lower quad, and a third-floor terrace that "opens onto smaller patio ensuring ample daylight," per the Read the Entire Article
