The US Department of Education has awarded the Cook Center for Human Connection the largest-ever funding award for programs that support "social-emotional well-being," reports the Albuquerque Journal.
The center, a nonprofit based in Salt Lake City, will receive a $3.99 million grant to serve 83 middle schools in New Mexico and Arizona.
The goal of the program is to reduce the 35% higher-than-average suicide rate among young people in the US by providing resources to educators, parents, and caregivers.
Parent Guidance.org will provide one-on-one parent coaching, interactive mental health series hosted by trained professionals, online courses taught by licensed therapists, and professional development sessions for staff at the schools.
"The Department of Education has recognized that youth mental health is a crisis that threatens the education and well-being of millions," says Anne Brown, CEO of the Cook Center.
"Through the grant, the schools participate in Parent Guidance.org, which includes one-on-one parent coaching for all parents of schoolchildren, interactive mental health series hosted by trained professionals, and a library of resources available to parents."
