The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation has awarded Kenosha, Wis., a $250,000 grant to help build a new community, the Kenosha News reports.

The Uptown Lofts development includes 71 workforce housing apartments, commercial space, a children's library, and a new branch of the Kenosha Public Library.

"The addition of much-needed affordable housing and a children's library makes the development even more attractive for residents of the Uptown Area and the entire city," says Nicole Ryf, president of the Kenosha Area Business Alliance.

Two businesses that used to be on the site of the former Cooper's Uptown store were destroyed in a fire during protests following the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo.

The new Uptown Lofts also includes space for a neighborhood grocery store, Uptown Restaurant, and the Kenosha Emerging Leaders Academy, which will offer programming to allow students and young adults to gain new skills and explore career pathways.

"In Kenosha, the state, local government, nonprofits, businesses and educators are all working together to build a neighborhood designed to inspire innovation and entrepreneurship," says WEDC's Missy Hughes.

"We know that entrepreneurship is one of the best ways for communities to build transformational wealth and are proud to support the changes being made in Uptown."
