A new tech company in Texas is trying to make it easier for parents to control what their kids read.
BookmarkED says it has a system that allows parents to see what books their kids have access to and approve them based on those choices, the Houston Chronicle reports.
"Our platform puts the power into the hands of their parents, so that they can decide the literary path for their children by setting parameters, over what books their children have access to," CEO and co-founder Steve Wandler says in a press release.
According to the American Library Association, 2,571 unique books and resources were challenged in Texas in 2022, nearly double the number reported since the association began tracking such things more than 20 years ago.
Wandler says he came up with the idea for BookmarkED after realizing how hard it was for parents to know what their kids were reading.
"It's hard for parents to know what books are appropriate for their children," he says.
"And it's hard for libraries to know what books are appropriate for their children."
