The city of Glendale, Calif., has a first-of-its-kind Poet Laureate, and Raffi Joe Wartanian isn't wasting any time in getting to know his new fans.
He's holding his first workshop on Saturday, "Unearthing Roots we herald we hide," at the city's Brand Library and Art Center, reports the Los Angeles Times.
Topics will include poetry writing, performance, and "light shopping," per a press release.
The laureate "will develop a project that engages community members of all ages in poetry writing, performance, and poetry appreciation; write a poem that celebrates Glendale's rich culture and diversity; and read poetry aloud at special events throughout the city," says the release.
Wartanian, who teaches writing at UCLA, will also hold quarterly poetry readings in the city of 200,000.
