Kingston Singer-Songwriter Kicks Off 2023 Local Arts Residency Program

"It's actually really hard for me to write music at home," Canadian singer-songwriter Megan Hamilton tells the Whig-Standard.

"I have an almost 12-year-old, and a dog and a cat and a husband.

My husband works early mornings and often naps in the afternoon, and everyone goes to bed early.

Trying to figure out a time when I can even make noise is sometimes difficult."

That's why the Kingston, Ontario, native was thrilled to be the first artist-in-residence at the Grand Theatre for the City of Kingston's 2023 Local Arts Residency program, which provides "space and support to Kingston's performing artists to explore ideas, create and nurture new directions in their work," per the Whig-Standard.

During her four-day residency, which began Wednesday, Hamilton will write and record six new songs in the empty Grand Theatre's Regina Rosen Auditorium.

"I've been doing this for so long, I knew if I could just have the focused space I would be able to get a lot done," says Hamilton, whose most recent albums were created with Canadian folk musician and music producer Jim Bryson.
